Some weeks I loosely meal prep and I'm mildly organized, I even cook from scratch on a Wednesday. Other weeks, dinner needs saving. Because it'll be tragic to start eating toast while standing at the kitchen counter.
Canned and jarred foods save dinner time
So this week feels like a small celebration of the useful little things that keep dinner going: freezer veg, jars of roast peppers and sundried tomatoes, wraps, leftover potatoes, herbs, tinned beans, and meals that do not sound impressive on paper but absolutely do the job.
5 things that save dinner
My YouTube video about the 5 things that save dinner is up now. I let you into what I make when the fridge is looking a bit uninspiring and my brain has politely left the building.
It is not about perfect meal prep neatly stacked in casseroles in the fridge. It’s more about the real-life bits I lean on when I still want something decent, colorful, and strongly leaning in the direction of gut-friendly plant variety, without starting from scratch every single night.
Think full-on meals made from beans, frozen veg, jarred things, herbs, pickled little extras, and the kind of shortcuts that make food taste like you had a better plan in the first place.
Very much in that spirit, I also shared my piadina pizza this week.
Piadina Pizza Napoli inspired
It is unashamedly fast. It is not pretending to be pizza napoletana. It is a piadina or wrap with toppings, crisped up until the edges go golden and the cheese does what cheese is supposed to do.
And guess what? I’m not apologizing for it.
Because when you load it with tomato, veg, herbs, a decent protein, or whatever bits you have hanging around, it becomes one of those “pretty okay for your gut” dinners that still feels fun. Not every meal needs to be a slow-simmered pot of beans with a sourdough side quest. Sometimes dinner is a folded, golden and crispy slice eaten while standing over the tray, and that still counts.
Also, very lovely thing happened this week: the Candyflosslife Facebook page has just nudged past 100 followers 🥳.
I know. Not exactly breaking the internet.
But it made me properly happy 🎉.
Because every follow feels like someone saying, “Yes, I want food that is good for my gut, but I still want it to be delicious, doable, and not joyless.”
And that is pretty much the whole point of Candyflosslife.
Food that helps you eat a few more plants, use what you have, enjoy your dinner, and maybe feel a little bit smug that the quick thing you threw together was actually quite good for you too.
So thank you 🙏 if you’re one of those people. I am genuinely delighted you’re here. And if you haven't yet and you enjoy this kind of eating, quick meals, colorful, gut-friendly and still properly delicious, come and follow along there too.
