September always feels like a bit of a handover month. Tomatoes are still hanging on, apples are boasting their best colors, and cauliflower's coming into its own.
I'm always looking to get more plant variety onto the table too, I know it sounds virtuous, but it's because the more different plants your gut bugs get to eat, the happier and more diverse they are. And none of it needs to be exotic. Beans, cauliflower, chickpeas, tomatoes, mushrooms, and apples are probably already in your fridge or pantry.
Fermented Cauliflower - just water, salt and one week patience
Three Dinners for Mid-September
Silky Tomato Soup Roasted vine tomatoes, a whole garlic bulb, and a spoon of miso blitzed into this silky tomato soup that's what toast soldiers dream of.
A meat-free one this week. Mushrooms, chickpeas, and feta packed into peppers and baked until the cheese on top goes properly golden.
Something Sweet
Apple Crumble Tarts Apples are properly in season now, and honestly, we could all use a bit of joy this time of year. Individual tarts with a buttery crust, spiced apple filling, and a generous oat crumble on top. No sharing😄 , everyone gets their own.
Fermented Cauliflower Cauliflower's in season right now too, and this is the pickle I reach for next to pretty much everything, curries, salads, even breakfast if I'm honest. Tangy, a little pink if you can find the right variety, and good for your gut bugs while it's at it.
If you've browsed the blog, you'll already know I have a handful of sourdough recipes. They're not written for a micro bakery, they're for beginners starting out, or for anyone a bit further along who just wants to feed their family better bread without turning it into a full-time hobby. If you're here because you love sourdough, or you're thinking about starting your own sourdough journey, I'd love to know.
